As you all could have probably guessed, I strongly agree that if you want a truck to haul shit (especially a lot of shit at once) and be fun to drive a Duramax is the way to go.

If you are looking for a vehicle that gives good performance, great versatility, and good longevity a Lightning is not a bad way to go. My 01 has right at 100k miles on it and it still pulls like a demon. If you are looking for a vehicle that is fast as hell, has great performance, good looks and you don't need the room or towing capacity keep the Camaro.
ROFLMAO - are you even serious? I have never seen a Lightning called a farm truck - 2WD, 1/2 ton, and fiberglass panels are not exactly farm friendly features. Room, in a regular cab pickup? the Camaro seats more people. Towing capacity, what is the towing capacity? About the same as a Dodge Dakota? So small boats, jet skis and trailers? I've seen a few Lightnings leaving Lowe's and Home Depot and with a small load of wood they were dragging ass out the parking lot. If you want a truely dependable (300,000+ miles with no problems is normal) truck that with a tune will outrun a 450rwhp Lightning, that will haul and tow anything you put in or behind it - see 1SLOWPOK's suggestion above.

I've actually seen a few lightnings towing cars and they weren't draging ass.

Speaking of breaking shit just about each of my trips to the track this year there was a least 1 broken Diesel truck. And yes the mighty Duramax was included. By the way didn't you just build a whole new motor. Yea theres a cheap investment. Why not run that unstoppable Duramax that was already in it for 300,000 miles? You said it not me. You know I'm gonna play devils advocate here.

Shakes I knew someone would. I've seen a few Lightnings towing cars and with the car back on the trailer so there wasn't much tongue weight of course they weren't dragging ass, but the trailer pulled like crap. SVT didn't have a work/tow truck in mind when they were building it.

Just like any other vehicle at the track if the driver doesn't know what he is doing or doesn't have his truck setup right (ie torsion bars dropped down for flat CV angles) you will have problems. Every time I've been to the track I've seen far more cars broken down than diesels. Yes I did build the whole motor - when going for 800+rwhp a stock motor was no longer going to be dependable (although a few guys have done it for a while on bone stock motors) - just like with any vehicle that you push that far. I am by no means the average diesel enthusiast and when I am talking about dependable daily driver work trucks that will smoke a 450rwhp Lightning I am refering to the average guy that has a 500+rwhp tune on a mostly stock Duramax running mid 12s, they are still dependable to 300K+ miles.

Ok now guys dont want this to turn into a gas vs diesel battle!
Id love to have a duramax but between the $$$ they cost and the fact that I really don't need that much truck I couldnt even justify looking into them. I know they are nice and can really be fast I dont want to make it a racer... But I will say if I found one in my price range id def consider one!

I know where there's an 860+hp Duramax for sale, I can find out what he wants for it. Seriously though if you look you can find a Duramax for a great price.

I've been to Rockingham several times and have seen Lightening trucks pulling race cars on trailers.

Last time I was there, one of them unhooked from the car trailer it was pulling; ran a couple of 11 second passes then hooked back up to the car trailer and towed the race car home.

Awesome, good for him - lol. I would bet he had air bags or helper springs based off the sagging ones I've seen. Every time I go to a diesel event I see diesels unhook from trailers hauling another diesel truck, or 28+ft enclosed toy hauler/camper trailers with all their gear. They run 11s or even 10s, then hang weights, swap tires and sled pull, then swap to street tires, hook back up to the 10,000+lb trailer and go home. Point is that it is a spectacle for a lightning to do it, but is an everyday thing for a diesel to do it. And my main point in the first place was that a Lightning is in no way a farm truck.
